Are there alternative options to having a hysterectomy?

Various alternative options are available for hysterectomy which may include surgical alternatives, hormonal pharmacological alternatives, non hormonal pharmacological alternatives and others. Women who suffer from DUB (dysfunctional uterine bleeding) can be treated through endometrial ablation which is procedure where the uterus lining is destroyed with the help of heat. Another option includes a procedure called myomectomy through which uterine fibroids are removed and uterus is reconstructed. Other techniques where fibroids are killed and are left out in the place to be reabsorbed by the body include Myolysis, uterine artery embolization, Focused Ultrasound surgery and radio frequency ablation.

Uterine artery embolization is basically a minimally invasive process which helps to control bleeding in situations like postpartum hemorrhage and in treating uterine fibroids. This procedure is performed by an interventional radiologist. Condition of menorrhagia where there is abnormal and heavy menstrual bleeding can be treated through less invasive means of endometrial ablation. Besides these other alternatives include uterine balloon therapy, adhesiolysis, oral contraceptives, gestrinone, non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs( NSAID),  resection of cul de sac obliteration, nerve blocks, uterosacral nerve ablation, tamoxifen , hypnosis lifestyle changes, exercise, diet and many others. The type of alternative mainly depends upon the reason or the ailment for which hysterectomy was considered.
