What are the baby blues?

‘Baby blues’ is a temporary period of mild stress, depression etc. and this normally occurs after 3-4 days of the baby’s birth. The reason for baby blues is mainly the hormonal changes that have taken place in the body. These rapid changes in hormones bring about many physical and emotional symptoms that re difficult to handle. The symptoms of baby blues include headache, stress, depression, feeling of loneliness, tiredness, sleeping disturbances etc. There is also other discomfort like aching muscles, sore breasts, and pain due to stitches, if any.

Baby blues also occur because the new mother is not getting enough rest because she has to cater to the needs of the infant. She also has disturbances due to visitors coming to meet her and see the baby. Apart from this, the hospital environment itself is quite depressing. Sometimes, the new born is not keeping well. This may add to the tension. The feelings of depression and stress continue to about a week or two in some females.

Even after going home, the female feels lonely and loaded with responsibilities. This is the time when she needs support from her spouse and family. It will help her to cope up with this situation faster.
