Is there a certain age that a hysterectomy should be done?

There is no certain age at which hysterectomy can be performed as it is an elective surgery and is only done under specific medical complications. It is also among the most common surgical procedures which are performed in the women of reproductive age.

The women between the age group of 40 to 45 have the highest risk of getting this surgery while the lowest risk group is the women in the age group of 15 to 24. Apart from age there are various other specific circumstances which leads to hysterectomy and these include certain types of cancer associated with reproductive system like ovarian, uterine and cervical. Other conditions include intractable and severe endometriosis or adenomyosis, severe developmental disabilities, postpartum to remove the severe case of placenta accreta or placenta praevia.

 Fibroids are also one of the other common reasons which cause hysterectomy to be performed. Endometriosis is the most common reason for hysterectomy  among the women who are in age group of 30 to 34 years whereas fibroid tumors is the reason for the surgery among the women of who are between 35 to 54 years of age. When the age of the women becomes older than 55 years then in such cases the most common reasons for hysterectomy is cancer and uterine prolapse. Women under the age group of thirty mainly get this surgery done due to menstrual disturbances and cervical dysphasia.
