What is Estrogen Therapy?

Estrogen therapy is the hormone based treatment in which estrogen is sent into a woman’s system either orally, transdermally or through vagina. Estrogen is responsible for maintaining multiple systems of the body. If the body is suffering from deficiency of estrogen which can be at the time of menopause or due to any other reason than estrogen replacement therapy becomes important for the rising estrogen level.

Estrogen therapy will prevent the women from the risk of osteoporosis, colon cancer or perimenopausal symptoms. It helps to increase the density of bones which was reduced at the time of menopause. If estrogen therapy is taken along progestin then uterine cancer risk is also eliminated. Headache, weight gain and fluid retention are the risk associated with the estrogen therapy. Estrogen therapy helps to reduce depression, enable us to get good sleep, reduces hot flashes severity, reducing irritation in the vagina and also reduces the risk associated with dental problem.

Estrogen therapy must be used only for a short period of time because its prolonged usage increases the risk of ovarian or breast cancer. Women undertaking estrogen therapy must not smoke cigarette otherwise it may cause blood clotting. Risk of heart stroke also increases with prolonged estrogen treatment.
