Low self-esteem and how it can affect sexual health

Self esteem is all about how individuals perceive themselves. It involves the attachment of pride and feelings of worth to one’s own talent. Self-esteem is one of the most important feelings of a human as it makes him feel content and good about himself and his activities. The higher the self-esteem, the more the person would be in control of his behavior.

Our self-esteem gets affected when we reach our puberty. It is at this point that our body begins to undergo several changes. Among numerous changes, the natural desire of being accepted and desired by their partner is the most striking. The person reaching his puberty may compare himself with the competing sex, especially the celebrities and actors they see on television and movies. When the person realizes that he is undesirable by his partner, or undergoes some mental stress, he faces a severe attack on his self-esteem.

A man often related his sexuality to his confidence. Thus, when his confidence gets shattered, his sexuality also gets affected. At such a situation, the person faces depression which is known to be one of the strongest triggers for sexual dysfunction among men and women. In women, lack of self-esteem leads to the inadequate production of libido and in men, the condition result into erectile dysfunction.
