Significance of testosterone

Testosterone is a significant steroid hormone that belongs to the androgen group. It is sex hormone which is secreted in to the testes of men and ovaries of women. It is the principal hormone which plays the key role in the development of the sex organs included in the entire reproductive system of males and females.

This hormone is formulated from cholesterol, just like most of the hormones found in the body. Though, it is found both the sexes, it is predominantly believed to be a man’s hormone. The effects of this hormone are classified into two types, virilizing effects and anabolic effects. In the anabolic effects, the muscle mass through the body grow in strength. This growth is accompanied by the enhancement of bone density and maturation and stimulation of the height.

The virilizing effects, on the other hand, result into the development of sex organs like penis and development of scrotum in fetuses. This effect is also responsible for the gradual development of secondary sexual characteristics like deepening the intensity of voice, development of hair in the armpits and growth of hair in form of beard in men. The decreased level of testosterone in both men and women can trigger feelings of disinterest towards sex.
