Trichomoniasis, if treated on time can stop further transmission. It also avoids the further health complications which would otherwise cause discomfort. The treatment involves single oral dose of the prescription drug metronidazole. This drug is effective in treating bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections. If this single dose fails to treat this health condition then the treatment is again prescribed for 3-5 days. In 2004, FDA approved tinidazole, to treat trichomoniasis.
When metronidazole fails, this drug is used in treating trichomoniasis. Some patients might be allergic to these two medications and in that case, this drug treatment won’t be effective for them. For them prescription medication of paromomycin is used. This is a topical medication. But, it is worth noting that this will only reduce the symptoms but is less effective as compared to metronidazole and tinidazole. It is also worth noting that according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the treatment must be for both partners even though one of them is infected.
This will eliminate the traces of parasite and thus further transmission is blocked. While the treatment is going on it is better to avoid sexual intercourse or activity. Pregnant women who have this disease must take doctor’s advice for treatment of this disease. |
